NOTE: * This original TV play evolved into the hit musical "Man of La Mancha".

*

Comments by Albert Sanchez Moreno

I have read the script, which has been published in Wasserman's book

"The Impossible Musical". It has almost the exact same basic plotline as

"Man of La Mancha".  Miguel de Cervantes and his servant are thrown into

a dungeon for a supposed offense against the Church. They are to be tried by the

Spanish Inquisition. The other prisoners conduct a mock trial in order to steal

Cervantes' possessions, but one of them is a manuscript that he desperately

wants to save. He begins telling the other prisoners the story of

Don Quixote,  and he, the servant, and all the prisoners play the characters

in the story. (The one difference is that in "Man of La Mancha", he actually

states his intention to perform the story as a play inside the prison,

and in front of all the prisoners, puts on the Don Quixote makeup.

In the TV play, apparently, we don't see him do this.)
